Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race to be Televised

4/1/2007

Next weekend the Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race will take place at 4:30pm GMT on the Thames River between Putney and Chiswick on the Thames River. This is the 153rd race between Oxford and Cambridge and is one of the longest standing sporting traditions in the UK. The race is being televised for the first time in the US. When I was a wee nipper in England this was the third largest television sporting event behind the FA Cup (soccer premier league cup) and the Grand National (Horse Racing). It’s fun to watch the crews compete over the 4 and a quarter mile course at stroke ratings of around 34 for approximately 20 minutes or so. The crews from Oxford and Cambridge hail from many different countries and the race has become a well renowned world wide event.

The date is April 7 and the broadcast is supposed to start at 10:00 AM CDT. It is Channel 253 on Cox, Channel 609 on DirecTV and Channel 148 on Dish Network. I, unfortunately, do not get those channels so if you are fortunate to get these channels and would be willing to make a recording to share with others, it would be most appreciated.
