Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors Featured in Midtown Section of Tulsa World

Youthful rowers discover thrill of competition with local club It was a frigid, drizzly February afternoon, too cold to step outdoors let alone go rowing on the Arkansas River.

Yet a group of experienced high school rowers took to the eight-person boats called shells for a ride on the river, which was smooth as glass.

Twenty-seven Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors, ages 14 to 18, and head coach Neil Bergenroth hope more will join the club after an introduction to rowing session last week.

Most winter rowing activities occur on indoor rowing machines, where students compete in ergometer tournaments. Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors won five first place medals Feb. 9 at the Dallas Southwest Amateur Ergometer Tournament. Indoor rowing competitions are fun, but outdoor rowing attracts the young and old to the sport, Bergenroth said.
