Learn to Row - November 17th - 21st, 2008
11/7/2008
TULSA OK - The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors will offer physical fitness training to high school age athletes interested in conditioning through the sport of rowing. Training will include weight lifting, ergo meter exercises, calisthenics, running and cycling, with a focus on rowing in racing shells. This is an excellent opportunity to join athletes from different high schools in staying physically fit during the winter.
Rowing is one of the best sports for improving physical fitness. The sport demands endurance, strength, balance, and mental discipline. Rowing is a total body workout that uses all of the body’s major muscle groups. It provides a great aerobic workout, it is low-impact on the joints, and it is fun.
Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors is a group of approximately forty high school athletes from all over the Tulsa area who meet Monday through Friday from 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. at the Tulsa Rowing Club Boathouse, located on the west bank of the Arkansas River at 715 West 21st Street. High school students interested in joining the winter training session should refer to the organization’s website at www.tulsajuniorsrowing.org. The winter season begins Monday November 17th and ends Friday, February 13th.
The Tulsa rowing program was formed 17 years ago and is one of two juniors programs in the state. Neil Bergenroth, a former collegiate rower at Boston University and former member of Great Britain’s Junior National Rowing Team, heads up the coaching staff of four. Bergenroth has been involved with the sport of crew for over 20 years and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Tulsa Juniors program. Through Coach Bergenroth’s expertise, the girls varsity team took second place and the boys varsity team took third place at the Central District Youth Championships in Oklahoma City in May. The girls varsity earned a trip to the US Rowing Youth National Championship in Cincinnati in June.
When asked to comment on his experience with the Tulsa Juniors team, Bergenroth stated, “It’s great to manage an environment where there is great opportunity for all of our student athletes. More than ten athletes from our club have gone on to row at the collegiate level in programs such as Boston University, Yale, Wellesley, Gonzaga, TU, and OCU.”
The racing season this past fall featured competitions in Oklahoma City, Austin and Wichita. The schedule for the spring racing season will take the team to races in Austin, Oklahoma City, and St. Louis.
